Applied Pharmacometrics Training (APT) Fellowship – Applications Opening Soon!

The Applied Pharmacometrics Training Fellowship – Africa Region is a collaboration between Certara, Pharmacometrics Africa, CP+ Associates, together with several pharma industry and academic partners. This is an intensive doctoral-level fellowship program that upskills participants to conduct regulatory quality clinical pharmacology and pharmacometrics analyses that could inform decision making. The program is an effort to increase the application of model-based drug development in Africa. 

Participation in this program provides opportunities to integrate work and education while facilitating the development of an international contact network. Consisting of an intensive 24-week virtual program, complemented by 2 week-long face-to-face sessions, fellows mainly work from their home location and interact using remote technology tools. The program provides online tutorials combined with hands-on project work in cooperation with partners from industry and academia. All projects end in a publishable unit, defined as a poster at a conference and/or a peer-reviewed manuscript.

The fellowship aims to build scientific and leadership capability in Africa by enhancing the skills of local scientists and by facilitating knowledge transfer to their wider scientific communities. The relationships forged between the hosts of this program and the fellows’ home institutions will further the endeavour to create next-generation medicines to ease suffering and improve quality of life for patient populations around the world. Successful participants in this program are eligible for mentorship, coaching and sponsorship towards employment in research centres in Africa or with the consulting team of Certara located on-site in Africa.

Included in the internship 

• • Scientific/clinical research infrastructure and training: Access to all necessary software, training and operational needs will be provided by the program hosts and their partners to support investigation of a jointly agreed-upon, pre-competitive (non-proprietary) clinical pharmacology scientific question.

• • Travel, accommodation & visas: (1) round-trip economy class airfare, (2) student-style accommodation for the duration of the on-site programs, and (3) support for educational visa applications.
    
    

Timelines & Location:

Applications open 16 October 2023 and are due by 26 October 2023

The hybrid (in-person and virtual) program is planned to start in November 2023 and will end in July 2024.

Requirements

Eligibility to this program is based on the following criteria: 

• • You have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. pharmaceutical, medical or biological sciences, applied mathematics or statistics)

• • You have recently completed your PhD or equivalent studies (i.e. early to mid-career)

• • You should already have done at least 1 clinical pharmacology or pharmacometrics data analysis project using descriptive or model-based methods

• • You have evidence of completing relevant courses on model-based analysis methods e.g. Pharmacometrics Africa courses or equivalent

• • You have access to a computer and stable internet connections

• • You are a proficient English speaker and based in an African country

• • You are committed to being a strong team player

• • Letter of motivation including the applicant’s expectations on benefits from the program

• • Evidence of baseline skills: e.g. PhD research synopsis or relevant publication on model-based analyses in the pharmaceutical sciences
