In February 2024, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa, played host to a workshop on Basic Pharmacokinetics. Led by Prof. Leon Aarons, this one-week intensive workshop focused on Basic Pharmacokinetics, delving into the fundamental concepts that underpin drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. With the participation of 53 attendees from diverse scientific backgrounds, including clinicians, pharmacists, and regulatory agents from South Africa and Kenya, the workshop aimed to bridge critical skill gaps in drug development and regulatory practices across African countries.
The workshop’s significance extends beyond knowledge dissemination; it directly confronts the developmental challenges identified in a report by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and collaborators. With Africa facing a shortage of expertise in clinical pharmacology and regulatory affairs, events like this workshop are vital for capacity building. By equipping participants with in-depth knowledge of pharmacokinetic principles and regulatory guidelines, the workshop enhances the continent’s regulatory competencies and drug development capabilities. This, in turn, improves the evaluation of drug safety and efficacy dossiers, particularly for medications used within Africa.
Pharmacometrics Africa, the workshop’s host, is dedicated to promoting science education across the African continent. By partnering with local research organizations and academic groups throughout Africa, organizations like SAHPRA and educational institutions like Stellenbosch University, initiatives like workshop on Basic Pharmacokinetics not only strengthen skills within African regulatory communities but also lay the groundwork for future collaborations and knowledge exchange.
