Celebrating a New Era for Pharmacometrics in Africa: Building on Global Momentum

Thank you for joining us at the first-ever Pharmacometrics Africa Conference (PMXAC-2025) under the theme “Celebrating a New Era for Pharmacometrics in Africa: Building on Global Momentum”. 

This was held together with our sister event, the second international Digital Health Africa Conference (DHA-2025) “The Future of Healthcare on the Continent”. We were also thrilled to co-host 2 side-events: a convening of experts to reflect on “Digital Transformation of Medicines Regulation in Africa” and a technical training workshop on nlmixr, the open source non-linear mixed effects modeling software.

The innovative climate-friendly format offered the opportunity to hold hybrid meetings at multiple physical sites together with virtual participation – thus maximising reach and serving as a blueprint for future similar events. 

The PMXAC-2025 scientific program was designed to showcase practical, high-impact pharmacometrics methods that can advance health and regulation across Africa. Presentations focussed on topics such as bioavailability and bioequivalence (BA/BE), model-based meta-analysis (MBMA), and physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling, tools that support evidence generation for African populations. The program explored how emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and large language models, can enhance regulatory efficiency. In addition, it addressed capacity building, career development, and job creation. Through these sessions, the conference aimed to foster scientific exchange, mentorship, and collaboration across academia, industry, regulatory agencies, and healthcare systems.

The conference brought together a vibrant community of 108 young scientists, local and international experts, clinical practitioners, researchers and regulators. The majority of the delegates joined from 16 African countries with a smaller number from Europe and North America either virtually or in-person.
