All about the Applied Pharmacometrics Training (APT) Fellowship 2025

Applications Closed! The Applied Pharmacometrics Training Fellowship is a collaboration between Pharmacometrics Africa, CP+ Associates, together with several pharma industry, consulting companies and academic partners. As described in our paper in CPT:PSP, this is an intensive doctoral-level fellowship program that upskills participants to conduct regulatory quality clinical pharmacology and pharmacometrics analyses that could inform decision making. The program, built on a framework developed by Pharmacometrics Africa and Certara, is an effort to increase the application of model-based drug development in Africa. Participation in this program provides opportunities to integrate work and education while facilitating the development of an international contact network. Consisting of an intensive 24-week virtual program, complemented by 2 week-long face-to-face sessions, fellows mainly work from their home location and interact via remote technology tools. The program provides online tutorials combined with hands-on project work in cooperation with partners from industry and academia. All projects end in a publishable unit, defined as a poster at a conference and/or a peer-reviewed manuscript. The Applied Pharmacometrics Training Fellowship – Africa Region aims to build scientific and leadership capability in Africa by enhancing the skills of local scientists and by facilitating knowledge transfer to their wider scientific communities. Reflections on the APT Program: My Journey

The Applied Pharmacometrics Africa Training (APT) fellowship was a turning point in my career, providing a foundation that has shaped my trajectory as a researcher in the field of pharmacometrics. It was a transformative experience. As one of the first cohort of the APT fellows, I had the opportunity to dive into real-world applications of pharmacometrics, working alongside Dr Veshni Pillay-Fuentes Lorente of Stellenbosch University, South Africa to explore the differing cure rates of Trichuriasis using albendazole-ivermectin co-medication in Tanzania and Côte d’Ivoire. Our work was eventually published in Drugs in R&D by SpringerNature (https://rdcu.be/dOC3l). The training I received during the APT fellowship was instrumental in preparing me for the prestigious Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF)-Genentech/Roche Research Development Fellowship. The APT fellowship has not only equipped me with new knowledge but has also positioned me to mentor upcoming researchers in pharmacometrics. This journey has been pivotal in reinforcing my commitment to strengthening pharmacometrics research capacity in Africa. In addition to my research, the APT fellowship inspired me to propose a pharmacometrics course for the fifth year pharmacy students at my institution. I believe that by integrating pharmacometrics early into the curriculum, we can foster a new generation of scientists capable of contributing to global healthcare. My Journey into the World of Pharmacometrics – A Blessing in Disguise

Life has an uncanny way of leading us to paths we never knew we were meant to walk. My story, especially in the field of pharmacometrics, is one of such fortuitous discoveries—a blessing in disguise. It all began during my early days as a lecturer at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. The transition into academia was already overwhelming, leaving me little time or energy to inquire about the activities happening around me. One day, I noticed a group of individuals gathered for a workshop in one of the seminar rooms. It didn’t pique my curiosity at the time—until a chance encounter shifted everything. A participant from the workshop, who was a Clinical Pharmacy lecturer from another institution, came to say a friendly “hello” to my department. It was from him that I first heard the term “pharmacometrics.” Little did I know that this chance meeting would become a defining moment in my career. The workshop, as I later found out, was the 2019 ‘Workshop on Introduction to pop PK using Monolix’ 2019 organized by Pharmacometrics Africa in collaboration with the Translational Pharmacokinetics Research Group (TPRG) at my institution. Bringing together learning and job creation opportunities: Applied Pharmacometrics Training @ PAGE 2023

Over two years, the Applied Pharmacometrics Training (APT) program has nurtured several cohorts of talented pharmacometricians through its comprehensive 3-6 month virtual program, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to conduct regulatory-quality pharmacometrics analyses and reports.  Recently, several participants from the program were selected to attend the Population Approach Group Europe (PAGE) 2023 conference in A Coruña, Spain. This event brought together leading experts, researchers, and industry professionals from the pharmacometrics field, providing an invaluable opportunity for the APT fellows to engage in cutting-edge discussions, gain exposure to the latest research, and network with key stakeholders in the industry. “It was inspiring to see the 2023 scientists shifting perspective and growing into solving real life problems with applied pharmacometrics” Samer Mouksassi During the conference, the APT participants showcased what they learned about applied pharmacometrics by presenting scientific posters, each highlighting global and locally-relevant contributions to the field of pharmacometrics. Second Year of Fellowship Program in Africa for Applied Pharmacometrics Training

Applied Pharmacometrics Training fellowship continues into the second year – Apply by 15 October 2022! Pharmacometrics Africa is pleased to announce the continuation of its Applied Pharmacometrics Training (APT) fellowship program for doctoral-level scientists from Africa, in partnership with Certara, Inc, CP+ Associates, and other industry and academic partners.  After its successful first year with sixteen fellows, the program has opened the call for applications for its second cohort. The APT in Africa is comprised of a 3-month virtual program that provides fellows with training to conduct regulatory-quality pharmacometrics analyses and reports.  Afterward, fellows can continue for another 3 months in an immersion program where they conduct a data analysis project leading to a publishable unit, under the supervision of subject matter experts.  The second cohort will begin the virtual program of the fellowship in January 2023. “I am thrilled with the engagement and progress of the first cohort of scientists – this has exceeded our initial expectations.  I encourage recent doctorate graduates who have completed core training in pharmacometrics and who want to apply quantitative approaches to benefit drug development and clinical practice in Africa to consider applying.” Colin Pillai, Ph.D., CEO of Pharmacometrics Africa and CEO of CP+ Associates The fellowship program is accepting applications now.  To learn more or apply, please visit the application site.
