Pharmacometrics Africa: Kenya

Who are we?

We specialize in pharmacometrics training and research, providing a comprehensive program that covers mathematical and statistical modeling, pharmacology, and practical experience in analyzing pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data.

The Pharmacometrics Research Group – Kenya (PRG-K), is located at Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS), Strathmore University and works in collaboration with the Centre of Research in Therapeutics sciences (CREATES). We work closely with researchers from various academic and research institutions both locally and internationally to achieve our goal of delivering top-quality pharmacometrics training.

Our primary objective is to deliver high-quality pharmacometrics training that is grounded in principles of ethics, mentorship, and service to society.

Mission Statement

Our mission is threefold:

  • promote pharmacometrics training through short courses and contributions to academic programs
  • provide a platform for exchanging ideas and initiating research collaborations in pharmacometrics
  • offer mentorship to students and researchers at all stages of their pharmacometrics careers

Core Group

Prof. Bernhards Ogutu holds multiple roles in the field of research and healthcare. He currently serves as the Director of the Centre for Research in Therapeutic Sciences (CREATES) at Strathmore University in Nairobi and also as the Chief Research Officer at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). In addition, he is a Senior Clinical Trialist with the Malaria Clinical Trials Alliance of the INDEPTH-Network. Prof. Ogutu’s research expertise lies in clinical trials, disease pathogenesis, and clinical therapeutics, with a focus on malaria and capacity development for clinical trials. He is a board-certified Medical Practitioner, Paediatrician, and Clinical Pharmacologist.

Dr. Linda Chaba is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Bioengineering & Therapeutic Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she develops translational tools to optimize tuberculosis drug regimens with the goal of accelerating drug development. A biostatistician by training and a 2022 Applied Pharmacometrics Training (APT) fellow, she previously served as Senior Lecturer and Academic Director at the Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Strathmore University.
Dr. Verrah Otiende is a senior lecturer of Statistics and Data Science at United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa), Kenya. She is also an alumna of the Applied Pharmacometrics Training (APT) fellowship by Certara & PMX Africa. She is dedicated to advancing the use of mathematical and statistical tools in the quantification of drug, disease, and trial information to facilitate effective drug development and regulatory decision-making. Her current focus is on the application of mathematical models to evaluate the robustness of model-based bioequivalence methods in the face of sparse sampling and model misspecification
Davies Otieno is a medical doctor, specialist in Internal Medicine and aspiring pharmacometrician. He is currently a PhD scholar at IDI, Makerere University, under the supervision of Prof. Catriona Waitt, working on using PBPK to understand antimicrobial concentration in complex pulations. He is an alumnus of the online clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics program offered jointly by Strathmore University, CREATES and PMX Africa and an alumni of the APT fellowship.

Martin Ongas is a Bioanalytical Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Therapeutic Sciences (CREATES) at Strathmore University. He is also an alumnus of the Online pharmacology and Pharmacometrics Training offered jointly by Strathmore University, CREATES and PMX Africa. With a background in Chemistry, Mr. Ongas specializes in the development and validation of novel bioanalytical methods by LC/MS and their application in generating pharmacology data relevant to pharmacokinetics studies. His current research project focuses on the development of a novel method for screening and therapeutic drug monitoring of four antipsychotic drugs.

Ms. Sharon is a pharmacometrics PhD student in the University of Cape Town at the UCT pharmacometrics research group. Her PhD is focused on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of tuberculosis treatments and ART regimens in special populations, with a special focus on pregnant women. She is dedicated to apply her pharmacometrics skills to facilitate efficient drug development and informed regulatory decision making among the special population including pediatrics, pregnant women and geriatrics.

I am a clinical pharmacist, researcher, and pharmacology lecturer at Kisii University. Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in paediatric oncology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. My research centres on the long-term outcomes for childhood cancer survivors in low- and middle-income countries, with a strong emphasis on optimising the safety and effectiveness of cancer treatment in resource-limited settings. At Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, I conduct research on survivorship and pharmacokinetic profiles among paediatric cancer patients and survivors. My growing interest in pharmacokinetics and pharmacometrics, which are data-driven treatment strategies for children with cancer, is motivated by the need for individualised care. Pharmacometrics is an essential tool for advancing health equity in Africa. I am particularly passionate about developing local capacity for model-informed precision dosing and ensuring African populations are represented in global drug development. Being part of Pharmacometrics Africa has enhanced my skills and connected me with a network committed to transforming therapeutics across the continent.
