Egypt Chapter Activities Update: Helping to advance Pharmacometrics Across the Region

We are pleased to share two recent engagements representing the PMX Africa Egypt Chapter in scientific and academic forums across Egypt. Vaccine Innovation Forum Dr. Nada Elhofy represented our chapter in a lecture on the role of “Model-Informed Drug Development (MIDD) in advancing vaccine innovation” (April 2026) as part of Africa CDC’s “Industrial Workshop in Vaccine Manufacturing” in collaboration with VACSERA . The session addressed how quantitative modelling and simulation can streamline vaccine research and development, optimise dosing strategies, and support clinical decision-making, bringing a pharmacometrics perspective to one of the most critical areas of public health. We extend our sincere gratitude to VACSERA, Africa CDC, and Future University in Egypt (FUE) for hosting this important event and for fostering collaboration around regional health solutions. MESPET 2026 — Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria (May 3–4, 2026) Dr. Aya Ismail represented our chapter at the 1st Annual Conference of the Middle East Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (MESPET), held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt (May 3–4, 2026). Dr. Ismail delivered a session titled “From Animals to Humans: Modelling as a Bridge in Drug Development,” addressing the role of quantitative modelling and simulation as a translational tool in drug development, bridging preclinical findings with clinical decision-making. In addition, Dr. Ibrahim Komeil represented the chapter by presenting a poster on Virtual Bioequivalence, highlighting the application of modelling and simulation approaches to support bioequivalence assessment and facilitate more efficient drug development. Building Pharmacometrics Capacity in Africa: Inside the Egypt Chapter’s First Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacometrics Course

This July, the PMX Africa – Egypt Chapter ran its first Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacometrics Course, delivered in partnership with the Faculty of Pharmacy at Future University in Egypt (FUE), and sponsored by DAF. What began as an idea to make quantitative pharmacology more accessible across the region turned into a two-weekend programme that reached hundreds of learners across four continents—and, by every measure we tracked, left them wanting more. A hybrid design, built for reach and depth The course was structured in two parts so it could do two things at once: reach broadly and go deep. Weekend 1 (10–11 July, online) was open to all accepted participants and covered the foundations: from the pharmacokinetics of absorption, distribution and elimination, through dosing at steady state, non-compartmental analysis and bioequivalence, pharmacodynamics, regression analysis, and a first introduction to population PK modeling. Weekend 2 (17–18 July, onsite at FUE) was an intensive, hands-on lab for a smaller hybrid track cohort, working directly in R: exploratory data analysis, NCA, population PK model building with nlmixr2, R Shiny, and interpreting model outputs. The idea was simple: give everyone a strong conceptual grounding online, then give a committed group the chance to put a keyboard under their hands and actually build models. Registration was open for just two weeks in June and drew 388 applications from across Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and beyond. My First PAGE Experience: Learning, Sharing, and Connecting Through Pharmacometrics

My name is Aya Ismail, and I am a clinical pharmacologist based in Cairo, Egypt, working in the field of clinical research and one of the co-founders of the Pharmacometrics Africa Egypt Chapter. I was also a fellow in the Advanced Pharmacometrics Training (APT) 2025 cohort. In 2026, I had the opportunity to travel to Croatia with my colleague Allan Kengo to present our work at the Population Approach Group Europe (PAGE) 2026 conference. Attending the PAGE 2026 conference was a very special experience for me, as it was my first time attending. For the first time, I was not simply following discussions about PAGE, reading its abstracts, or hearing about the incredible scientific exchanges taking place within the pharmacometrics community. I was actually there surrounded by scientists whose work had inspired my own journey into pharmacometrics. As someone coming from Egypt and growing within the African pharmacometrics community, this experience felt particularly meaningful. For me, the experience was made even more meaningful by the opportunity to present our project as part of the APT 2025 cohort. With my colleague Allan Kengo, we presented our work as a poster, sharing the project we had developed throughout the fellowship. You can view our poster here. We are proud to announce the official launch of the Egypt Pharmacometrics Chapter, a dedicated community of scientists, clinicians, and educators committed to advancing clinical pharmacology and model-informed drug development (MIDD) across Egypt, the Middle East, and Africa. Egypt now formally joins a growing continental network of national pharmacometrics chapters, united in the conviction that quantitative science can meaningfully transform the way medicines are developed, evaluated, and personalised for patients. The Egypt Pharmacometrics Chapter is part of the Pharmacometrics Africa network. We bring together researchers, clinical pharmacologists, pharmaceutical scientists, and educators from across Egypt who share a common ambition: to build a rigorous, inclusive, and impact-driven pharmacometrics community that can hold its own on the world stage. Our work is grounded in science and driven by a sense of regional responsibility, the belief that Egypt, sitting at the crossroads of the Middle East and Africa, is uniquely positioned to lead. Why Pharmacometrics Matters for Egypt, the Region, and the World Drug development has never been more quantitative. Across the globe, regulators, industry, and clinical scientists are turning to model-informed approaches such as pharmacometrics, population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modelling, physiologically based pharmacokinetic modelling, and systems pharmacology to make smarter, faster, and more ethical decisions about medicines. This shift is not a trend; it is a transformation, and it carries profound implications for countries like Egypt and the broader Middle East and Africa.
