Call for applications Pharmacometrics Africa Africa invites applications for PhM-2026, a supported online pharmacometrics course delivered through the PMXAfrica Moodle platform. About this series PhM-2026 builds on the PMXAfrica self-paced pharmacometrics course and will run as a structured 12-week cohort with induction, weekly lessons, live tutorials, discussion forums, progress tracking, and completion certificates. Who should apply: The course is intended for researchers, clinicians, pharmacists, pharmacologists, statisticians, data scientists, regulators, postgraduate students, and early-career scientists who want to build foundational understanding of pharmacometrics and its applications in clinical pharmacology, drug development, therapeutic optimisation, and regulatory science. Applicants should be able to commit approximately 4-6 hours per week for self-study, exercises, tutorials, and discussion. Course content: The course covers core principles of pharmacometrics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, biostatistics, compartmental modelling, repeated dosing, PK-PD modelling, data analysis, non-compartmental analysis, and bioequivalence. Delivery Platform and Support: The course will be delivered through PMX Africa Moodle. Accepted participants will receive Moodle access instructions before induction. Congratulations to our colleagues for successful completion of the Applied Pharmacometrics training Fellowship

Mohammed Ali and Cassius Phogole, two PhD students from Stellenbosch University successfully completed the 2024 Applied Pharmacometrics Training Fellowship Program. They report that it was an enriching experience and provided them with a comprehensive understanding of pharmacometrics, introduced them to new software tools and enabled deep insights into conducting regulatory level analysis as they had the invaluable opportunity to work with industry data. The collaborative environment fostered valuable learning from both instructors and peers. The program was meticulously organized, featuring state-of-the-art learning materials and tools, alongside highly experienced faculty members and distinguished guest speakers. Overall, it was an intense yet highly rewarding program that significantly advanced their skills in pharmacometrics.

Enhancing clinical pharmacology and pharmacometrics skills through the SNIP-Africa project

The SNIP-AFRICA project is coordinated by Fondazione Penta ETS (Italy) and St George’s, University of London (United Kingdom). SNIP-Africa initiatives consist of: creating adaptable research infrastructure, conducting adaptive clinical trials to identify best antibiotic regimens and doses to treat difficult neonatal infections, stakeholder engagement for successful implementation of adaptive trials, and capacity building and training of African researchers and clinicians whilst fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration. A basic pharmacokinetics workshop held at Stellenbosch University in January 2024 was the first SNIP-Africa initiative to build capacity and train clinicians in basic pharmacokinetics. Upcoming events includes a Basic modelling course using Nlmixr2 and Fundamentals of clinical pharmacokinetics and model informed dosing prediction.

[Stellenbosch University Chapter] Brainstorming Session & Research Project Showcase

Recently, Stellenbosch University hosted Samer Mouksassi and Wynand Smythe from Certara for a pharmacometrics brainstorming session. It was a day filled with great discussions addressing pertinent health care issues. Masters and PhD students showcased their current research projects and had an opportunity to brainstorm ideas with experts in the field of pharmacometrics. Participants were from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

Recently, our colleagues at the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) hosted a webinar, “Building the Global Pharmacometrics Community,” featuring several members of our team. We are pleased to inform you that this webinar has been featured in their Open-Access Webinar Library and is available to anyone regardless of membership or having attended their Network & Community Experience (NCE) previously. You can view the webinar in its entirety here. This is especially timely given that the 2024 Applied Pharmacometrics Training program will open to new applicants shortly – prospective applicants can view this webinar to hear first-hand experiences from three former participants in the program. In addition, the team at ASCPT is offering webinar access to any non-members located in Low- and Middle-income Countries (LMICs) for at least the month of October 2023.
